The developed in-house simulation code has the advantage of conducting modifications of the suggested configurations to include effects not covered by the commercial simulation models. Such kind of numerical simulation can be used as a flexible research tool for the design and analysis of solar cells. The objective of this work is to develop a detailed numerical simulation of solar photovoltaic cells in one, two, and three-dimensions. In addition, PC1D simulations are also used for validating the reflectance spectra and measuring the performance of solar cells with different combinations of antireflection coating. Various experimental measurements were used to validate the accuracy of the mathematical equations that are used in this study. Mathematical equations for single, dual and multi-layered ARC are presented and simulated with the use of MATLAB. This study aims to understand the fundamental working principles and the mathematical equations of thin films that are used as antireflection coatings on crystalline silicon solar cells. An accurate computer simulation based on fundamentals of light and thin films are needed in order to select the best design of antireflection coating layers for the optimum performance of the solar cell. Antireflection coating is a thin layer of dielectric material deposited on the silicon substrate in order to reduce the optical losses due to reflection and increase the transmittance of light, thus improving the solar cell's overall efficiency. One of the most important technique that became an integral part of modern solar cells today in order achieve maximum efficiency is the antireflection coating layer. These reflections can significantly reduce the generation of charge carriers which results to lower efficiency. A portion of incident light is reflected due to inherent reflectance of the materials used in fabricating the solar cell. Efficient absorption of light into the device is of utmost importance in the design of an efficient solar cells.
